TECOM Group founded DIAC in 2007 as a university town and a residential free-zone dedicated to higher education. It was approved by the Dubai government and opened as a shared campus where Knowledge Park's schools, colleges, and institutions would relocate. DIAC's Managing Director was Dr. Ayoub Kazim, a former associate professor at the United Arab Emirates University. Mohammad Abdullah, the president of the Dubai Institute of Design and Innovation, was appointed managing director in 2016.

DIAC serves as a foundation for various residential colleges and institutions, with a campus size of more than 129 million square feet. Following its foundation, the university embarked on a campus expansion program, which was completed in 2012.

Dubai International Academic City celebrated its tenth anniversary in 2017. Curtin University and the United Arab Emirates University announced branch campuses at DIAC in the same year.

DIAC has developed to become one of the world's major educational centres. DIAC, which consists of 27 residential colleges and institutions as well as three innovation centers, enrolls approximately 27,500 students from over 150 countries. More than 500 bachelor's, master's, and doctoral programs in business, engineering, general sciences, humanities, management, medical sciences, and technology are available in universities and colleges across the country. It was dubbed the largest educational hub in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). In the future, many more institutions are likely to migrate to DIAC. DIAC now includes prestigious universities from around the world, such as American University, Murdoch University, BITS Pilani, and British University.

Due to the huge number of students enrolled, DIAC has undertaken student housing projects to provide affordable housing for students attending DIAC-affiliated colleges. Two of these student housing projects have been completed and are fully operational. Some universities, on the other hand, have their own residential facilities, and students can choose between the two.

DIAC has taken a number of initiatives to support innovation and businesses, including providing incubation facilities in innovation centers to interested students.
